To some, freedom is a privilege that can be easily taken for granted. It's not until you lose that privilege that you come to fully appreciate it. In Freya's case, freedom meant only one thing: death. From years of captivity, Freya came to understand the true nature of humans and after thousands of days and nights of torture, she knew the only way to gain her freedom back was in a body bag.
So when the research center was thrown into chaos due to another prisoner getting loose, Freya saw the once in a life time opportunity to escape. Despite her current condition- a few broken ribs, a cracked knee cap, possible internal bleeding, improper healing from her pregnancy, several cuts and needle marks as well as a concussion from an altercation with one of the guards a day ago- Freya navigated the maze like corridors, using her memory from being moved from lab to lab for testing, with a newfound determination to survive. Because of the disorientation from the other prisoners, Freya managed to find an exit without any obstacles. Once outside she was met with unfamiliar surroundings, loud noises, and the unmistakable smell of pork and onions in the air but she didn't care. If this was what freedom felt like, they were the most precious sounds and smells she could ever hope for.
Although she managed to escape, Freya still had to get as far away from the facility as possible with no idea of where she was. Before this Freya had only visited New York once, but with advances in technology and architecture, it was hard to distinguish the old cobbled streets and two story buildings from the metropolis it was today. With her hand on her aching stomach-partly from the trauma and partly from the lack of food- she guided her way through alley after alley until she found walking becoming almost impossible as breathing currently was. Nonetheless, she pushed herself to go even further until finally she collapsed on the cold, hard concrete and slipped into a dreamless sleep.

Coming off his third consecutive ten hour shift, the subway ride home was somewhat of a blessing. The flicker of light as the car passed through the tunnels kept him just awake enough to know when his stop was. His hands were kept shoved into the pockets of his jacket, the red pattered scarf tied around his neck losely.
The harder part was the walk to his car, it was only two blocks but even now after all these years the bitter wet weather this time of year was murder. People in the city didn't normally look up where they were walking and truth be told he didn't either. Though this was one night he was thankful he had.
Though he hadn't seen her stumble into the alley, he had however seen the mass laying on the concrete. Homelessness was rampant in the city though this didn't seem like the case. This seemed like something far worse. He knew what this was, but even then the feeling had felt odd. That ache in his bones starting in the forearms, radiating outward through his chest. And almost instantly his fingers spun the antiquated ring on his left hand.
Carefully he adjusted his bag, slipping the strap tighter over his shoulder depositing his keys back into his pockets. And slowly he diverted his attention into the alley. The last lingering crowd paid no mind to him this late in the night.
Had a demon tried to dispatch of this angel? She was still breathing, there was still a chance. He spoke up trying not to startle her reaching out a gloved hand.
"Easy...easy... Are you alright ? Ma'am...are you alright? " he pushed lightly on her shoulder unaware of the extent of her injuries, thinking of calling the police, that might have been the safer solution but he had never been one concerned with safety. |

The sound of his voice was muffled by the sounds of cars honking and light rain beginning to hit the floor beneath her, but his warm glove against her cold skin was enough to wake her up. Moving, however, was a different story. Every bone and muscle in her body ached and throbbed. Not having walked on her own this far in over 10 years was a bit strenuous and required more effort than ever before. Confinement in a small space left little room for exercise and along with the pain she had felt every step might be her last. But she was determined to survive. A fighter unwilling to go down. She had lived over 1,000 years with a demon as his slave, survived countless plagues and wars, survived several pregnancies without medicine, and even robbed federal banks with little to no chance of escape. After everything shes been through, she wasn't about to let a few broken bones and a concussion stop her.
Though she feared being caught by the hunter group, she felt if the stranger had any intention of taking her back, he would have already. Instead, she was met with genuine kindness and warmth, something she hasn't felt since her days in Scotland. She cracked her eyes open slightly in an attempt to match a face to the voice but found it difficult to get a clear image through blurred vision. "P-please.....don't take me back there." She muttered softly and reached out to him with failed efforts. She hoped that was enough before she began to slip in and out of consciousness due to the concussion.

All he had needed to make matters worse was the piss-poor attempt at rain coming from the sky. He hated the weather here so much, it was just too wet. The only real reason for him to be here was in all honesty, pound for pound there were more humans here. These people needed him here and that was all he really needed to know.
“It's alright...you're going to be ok.” he began try to keep her awake, talking to her being the simplest way it seemed. But even then this woman didn't seem to have the energy to stay awake. And then she spoke, something about going back to somewhere. Where had she even been all this time? Had she gotten all these injuries there?
“You're not going back there, I assure you. I just need you to stay awake.” He took hold of her hand when she reached out to him before making the decision. He took off his bag before removing his jacket. Could she even stand? With her trouble staying awake it didn't seem likely that she would be able to walk the two blocks to his car. Could he carry her, would that draw too much attention? He didn't want to risk attracting onlookers then again who really had the time to think about that sort of thing?
“I'm going to move you just...just try to relax.” Osiris began to move her slowly adjusting his jacket over her shoulders throwing his bag back on. It would be too risky to carry her that far, the movement might jostle something if he wasn't careful. But he couldn't just leave her there and go get his car. Even running the lost time might be the only difference between her survival. He was just going to have to carry her.
Carefully he lifted her up off the ground, one arm behind her back and the other under her knees with his jacket loosely over top her chest. Osiris walked her to the car and fumbling with the keys before finally opening the door. "You're going to be alright...I'm going to take you somewhere safe. I live closer than the nearest hospital. " The small house in the suburbs was really the only logical place at least until the morning. Driving back to the ER was out of the question.
After setting her in the seat with his jacket he kept talking to her, asking questions, little things here and there trying to keep her consciences. Though it seemed to be a loosing battle as he drove out of the city and into the suburbs.

The mere thought of being moved sounded painful, and it was, but she endured. Slight whimpering sounds could be heard as he lifted her into his arms. The kind that gave way to her condition more than she was letting on. The lift wasn't the worst part, however. It was the walk that gave her the most trouble. At least the shivering stopped, the jacket covering the top portion of her tattered gown-giving her the appearance she might have already been in a hospital at one point- gave her protection from the rain, but it was the warmth radiating from his body that gave her comfort from the cold. Even though she knew nothing about this man, she had never felt so safe, and while she fought with the bumping and jostling of being carried, rested her head against his chest, his heart beat her lullaby.
When they finally made it to the car, once more she had to endure the pain of being moved. Once inside she found solace in the comfort of the car and once again found herself drifting asleep. Her rest would be short-lived however as the stranger continued to talk to her and ask questions, even going to far as to turn the radio on in order to keep her awake. Freya, even in her condition, understood the reason why he was keeping her awake, though that didn't make her like it any more. Now that she felt safe, all she wanted to do was rest. Knowing that she most likely did have a concussion she followed along and answered any questions the best she could.
The more she talked, the more coherent she became. Freya had no idea how much time had past and she couldn't remember the date, then again she never had a calendar in her cell to keep track of time either. "What year is it? Where am I? Chicago?" She asked in a slight groan as she brought her hand up to be used as a headrest. She thought that might have been an odd thing to ask but considering her possible concussion it was a reasonable request.

| "My job as a physician is to make sure I have provided my patients with the best options to make the decisions that affect their lives." [x] -- Ami Bera This wasn't going to be an easy thing, and hearing her whimper was difficult to manage.
“I know you want to sleep right now, but I can't let you do that.” He said in response to her nodding off. In weather like this, and he didn't even know how long she had been out there, or where she had come from. There were too many variables. But hopefully once he got her someplace safe that would change. He was at least hopeful, she seemed to become more coherent the more questions he asked.
The drive wasn't terribly long, heading slightly out of town late in the evening was an easier drive than in the mornings. The radio was kept low, his questions mostly filling the silence. “It's 1983, you're in New York.” he answered his soft accent, clearly middle eastern. He wasn't really sure what to say after that, other than his name.
"I am Osiris. You remember your name correct or?" he glanced over at her before finally pulling up along side the curb. "This is home. Now I'm going to pick you up again, but this will be the last time. I promise." And he got out of the car again before heading to the passenger side door.
"Alright I'm going to lift you on three." he began "One...two.." There was no three he never ever made it to three. He had picked her up again in the same manner carrying her up the stairs into the building. He didn't have any trouble getting her inside and taking the elevator up to his floor was a blessing.
"Almost there..." he added stepping out from the elevator and finally making it to his room taking her inside. It wasn't anything special, taupe walls and light colored wood floors with oriental rugs and old leather furniture, though the cleanliness of it was astonishing. It was somewhat hard to tell if anyone actually lived here.
Finally he arrived, the back hall into the bedroom which he had thought more appropriate than dumping her on a futon. He set her down on the bed finally able to see her in light that wasn't a dimly lit street lamp. And finally the real questions had come to mind as he took back his jacket and pulled back the sheets.
"There...now I think it's safe to say you're not going to be moved any time soon."

1983. 10 years, 5 months, 12 days--not that she was counting. If she wasn't already sitting down she would have fell from the sheer shock of it. Her mind became numb as she struggled to wrap it around the realization that she had lost much more than her child, her dignity, or her ability to fly--but her time. The only comfort she gained from it was to compare it to the eternity she once perceived it as. While in captivity, it felt like time was non-existent. As an angel and now a demon, time wasn't as precious as it was to her human companions but when forced to spend it confined to a 5x5 electric encased cell with no sense of time, it wasn't long until she began to question her own mortality. Before she could answer his inquiry they came to a stop and once more Freya tensed from the upcoming pain she would receive from being moved. This time when he picked her up she was prepared and quickly wrapped her arms around his neck, holding tight as to make it easier for him. It seemed to help as he carried her inside until they reached the elevators, where panic set in. Once the doors closed she felt her chest tighten and her vision become blurry. Was this a panic attack? Her first instinct was the wiggle her way out of his arms and claw her way out, but she didn't, instead she dug her nails into his jacket and squeezed as if holding him tighter would make everything okay. Even though she desperately wanted to she didn't have the energy--or an ability to stand--but the fear of being enclosed in a tight space made time feel slow and endless, thankfully to subside by the elevator doors opening to reveal the flickering light hanging on the wall across from them. Finally they made it out of the elevator and into his home. The idea of being in someone else's bed was unsettling--mostly because she had never been with anyone other than Nykoale-- but the soft cushion and clean sheets made her think she had died and gone to heaven, if such a thing even existed. Even before her manipulated devotion to him she was too timid to get close enough to anyone because of her fear stemming from her superstitious mothers misguided views on her adopted daughters origins. Though the truth has been clear to her now, old habits die hard. "Thank you. I'm not sure how I can repay such kindness with equal measure.” A harsh, Scottish voice could barely be heard over the coughing fit but her smile spoke a thousand words. ”I-I don't have any money or anything of value, and I don't want to intrude on your life, but I promise on my mother's grave once I'm back on my feet I will do everything i can to return the favor ten-fold.” She paused for a moment as she attempted to wetten her dry mouth with saliva alone, afraid to ask any more of him when she remembered his question from before. She couldn't pay him back in gold or cash, but giving him her name and gratitude was at least a start. ”My names Freya, or Fay if you prefer, you can call me whatever you like honestly. Are these silk?" She said as she ran her hands over the bed sheets

Osiris shook his head pulling his hands out of the pockets of his scrubs when she mentioned something about repayment. Her accent was an almost unfamiliar sort as even he had begun to lose his Middle Eastern accent for the harsh sounds of America's Northern coast. "Let's worry about that later." he said simply before raking his fingers through his dark hair the tired look in his eyes was clear as day and in all honesty he expected it to only become longer.
Such a strange thing had happened to him tonight, a stranger in the street nay an angel? But the sense he couldn't shake from his bones made him twist the leather tie of his necklace, a long disregarded nervous habit.
"Freya, if you insist it will be a favor then, for a favor and nothing more. But you need to rest now." He didn't want to needlessly prod her, if she still had the energy to speak then perhaps she wasn't as bad off as he had thought when he had first carried her to his car. But still it was best not to press his luck.
"Osiris... Osiris Zaheer." he said before adjusting the covers on his bed pulling them tighter with a sort of chuckle.
"I may be a doctor but silk sheets is not something I could certainly afford." He said before heading into the kitchen for a moment putting the kettle on the stove and rummaging around for a pitcher. This was going to be a bit of old fashioned medicine, there were no IV's, no feeding tubes or saline drips here, just blankets, water and warmth.
"If you can manage you need to at least drink something before you fall asleep. I have a kettle started but..." he set the pitcher with the glass on the stand. Freya could have fallen asleep by now for all he knew, keeping the exhausted woman awake was surely torture for her after all. |
