Adelina walked around with her camera swinging around her neck. Her blue eyes shined happily as she took pictures of kids ran around on the park's lawn. Their laughter entered the warm afternoon air. Her hands stayed on the camera as she stood there against a tree that looked over the relay race. Kids and their parents teamed up to do a sack race and a three leg race. Her blue eyes shined as she stood in her jeans, flowery blouse and gray sweater. She took up the camera and peered into the view finder and snapped some pictures of the bright and laughing faces. A smile went up on her soft lips as she stood there enjoying their fun and happiness. "What a day and what an event. It is good to see laughter and fun on a such an amazing day." She said to herself before moving down the small slope to congratulate the winning team. Addie smiled as she allowed he camera to rest around her neck again. She then looked around and sighed as other volunteers helped prepare the next relay race for the kids. It felt good to have such a group who is willing to help the children who have some disabilities. This amazing event happened twice a year in the summer time. Adelina felt good that she could volunteer her photo-taking skills for the event so the kids can remember it.

Whenever Gabe was back in Los Angeles for this event‒and he always tried to be‒he was volunteering for it. He didn’t care where he was working or what he was doing, he just loved helping out with it. Today though, he was helping to set up relays. The day was a gorgeous one, as if the world knew these kids needed a good day. Between events‒when he wasn’t quickly setting up the next one‒he was wandering, enjoying the sights and sounds of little kids playing and having fun. He was pleased as punch to see that there was a photographer snapping pictures of the families and friends.
The sound of a whistle snapped him out of his reverie and alerted him to the end of one relay. Him and the rest of the set up crew leapt into action and the next one was ready to go as quickly as they could manage. Kids rushed forward as their parents called their names. He looked up just in time to see two kids running towards them, damn near close to hitting the young woman taking pictures and they didn’t even seem to see her in their path and her back was to them. He wasn’t sure what the outcome would be, whether she would be knocked over or the kids would end up hurting themselves but either way he didn’t want to know.
He was quick getting into action and in a heartbeat thanks to military training he was standing beside her, scooping the two kids into his arms, each making a little “oomph” as they were halted in their tracks. “Look where you two are going from now on. Don’t want any one getting hurt, do we?” he asked and the two kids shook their heads, “Good. Now go have fun you two.” He released them both and with a “thanks mister” the two kids surged off again, probably not paying any attention to where they were going. He chuckled and rolled his eyes playfully, “Kids, huh?” he laughed softly, “Oh to be young and full of such joy.” He turned towards the blonde, “Hello stranger, I’m Gabriel.” He said with a grin.

Adelina was too into her photography. It was just when the patter of two pairs of feet that almost reached her. The mortal turned around her blue eyes widened in shock as two kids came charging at her. Addie then gasped as a handsome man came and scooped them up. The mortal rested her hand over her chest as she calmed her beating heart. Her head ducked a little as the man scolded the kids before sending them away. Looking up again, she smiled at him. Her heart fluttered in her chest with relief as her blue eyes gazed up at her savior. "Yeah. Also, it was not long ago since I was their age. All their energy and happiness always makes my day. I never missed this event, since I do love the expressions on their faces. My camera lens does a good job in preserving this amazing day and event in the pictures it takes. Also, it gives them memories to remember." She said as she watched as the two kids went back to running in the relay. She then turned toward the man. "Thank you for saving me from being trampled." She softly laughed as she allowed the camera to hang around her small neck. Her eyes looked up at the man who states his name. "It is a pleasure to meet you, Gabriel. I am Adelina. People call me Addie for short, since Adelina is a mouthful." She said politely and offered her hand in a handshake. The woman smiled and turned to looked around as the relay race ended. She took her camera from her around her neck and snapped some pictures before turning back to Gabriel. Her blue eyes never leaving his handsome and kind face. "If you want to. I will not mind some company." She offered.

Gabriel offered another smile as he shook her hand gently, “It is a pleasure to meet you Addie. You can call me Gabe.” He said softly as he looked back at the relay. This woman was young, mortal, but despite his age he couldn’t help but be drawn to her ever so slightly. Maybe it was her happiness from watching the others. Maybe it was because she volunteered specifically to make sure these people had a physical thing to remember this day. Maybe it was because she seemed kinder than most. Whatever the reason his green eyes shifted back to her blue ones when the race was over, and apparently her eyes couldn’t be torn away from him either. He had that effect on people he supposed; mortals were drawn to most of the angels that to their good looks but there were very few times in the course of his long life he was also genuinely interested in them in more than a charitable stand point.
She spoke again, her voice like music, and he managed with some effort to get out a reply without stumbling over his words. “Well, I believe that are taking a break from races to give the little ones a snack‒not that they need more energy‒so until they need me again, I will be glad to provide you with some company, milady.” He sported his usual lopsided grin and tilted his head. “Lead the way to wherever you’d like.” he said with the gesture of his hand, maybe if they had to walk they would peel their eyes off each other for even just a second.

Adelina heard his nickname. "Okay, Gabe, it is a pleasure to meet you. Again, thank you so much in saving me from the stampede of kids." Addie gave a soft laugh. She then heard his words. Her head nodded before tucking her blond hair behind her ears as she watched the races end. She then looked at her wrist watch on her left hand. "Well, there is a scavenger hunt for about a hour and a half after lunch or snack time." She said before looking at Gabe. "This is the only thing I have planned for today and the weekend." She shrugged and paused as she nodded to an empty bench. "Let's sit down for a bit until the kids are done snacking." She said before moving and sitting at the said picnic table. She then rested her hands on the bench and looked at Gabe. "So, how long have you volunteered for this event? I have been doing it since I was 20 years which is about ten times... since they hold twice a year." She said as she sat on the table part of the picnic table. The wind played with her hair as she sat there. "I like volunteering since I always wanted a child, but this is the closest I can get to working with children. The people here are friendly and there is so much fun and happiness with these amazing events." She said and smiled a little as she looked at Gabe. "What do you think of hiking with me after the event is over?" She finally asked after a few moments of silence. Her blue eyes blinked as she hoped that he will agree on the idea of walking with her.

Gabriel followed her to the bench and sat down beside her, remaining a respectful distance away, and got as comfortable as one could on a park bench. She told him a little about herself‒little bits on information that were inconsequential but actually tell you a lot about a person if you listened to what was said. She was merely twenty-five and avid on the volunteer scene, at least when it came to this event. She liked working with kid to see their joy. “I’ve been working it on and off for quite a while now. I am not always in town for one reason or another, whether it be another tour with the army or volunteering for another event in another city keeping me away. I travel a lot to help other people out when I can.” He said casually, it wasn’t an attempt to brag, just an explanation of why he wasn’t here as often as he’d like to be. He realized it sounded like a brag though and crinkled his nose up at the thought, “That sounded braggy. I didn’t mean to brag.” He muttered mostly to himself. Then she invited him on a hike and his smile returned. “I would love that, actually.” He said as his gaze shifted over to her.
~~~~~~~~~~
The day of fun was over, the fields were all being cleaned up by the volunteer staff, and tuckered out kids were being carried to the cars by their parents. One thing was for certain; everyone would be sleeping soundly tonight. Once everything was in order Gabe made his way back over to Addie so they could start their hike. He offered her a grin as he came to a halt next to her, “All set?” he asked with an eyebrow raised in inquiry.
Adelina gazed at him as he sat at her side. Her blue eyes blinked as she sat there. Her hands laid on her lap as she listened to him speak. "That is good that you travel. I don't travel much, but I sort of wish I do. I like the idea of seeing new places and having life experiences. Still, Los Angeles is a well known city. A lot of people congregate here." She said politely and shrugged as she enjoyed Gabe's presence. "No, it is alright. You are not bragging, Gabe." She said before reaching out and squeezing his arm politely. Her hand retreated after a few moments before she beamed at him when he agreed to take a hike with her. Addie gave him a cheery smile as she nodded her head. --------- Addie watched as kids won prizes from the scavenger hunt before the whole event ended with a huge group picture. Adelina then watched as the kids were taken home by their parents before she helped with putting everything away. After about a hour of clean up, everyone has left except for her and Gabriel. Adelina stored her camera in its case and waited for Gabe to come. Soon, she saw the handsome man walk over and gave him a smile. Her blue eyes met his green eyes before nodding her head. "I am ready when you are, Gabe." The mortal said before stepping to his side and starting on the mellow hike. "It was a fun day. I am also glad that I was part of it." She whispered as she stayed at his side. The mortal woman then gazed at his hands since she wanted to hold them, but stopped herself from asking. She thinks it is rude to ask to hold someone's hand since they just met. She then sighed as she leisurely strolled. Her eyes gazed up at the waving trees as the mid afternoon moved into a late afternoon. The breeze made her shiver as it played with her dirty-blond hair. Her hands crossed over her chest as she grimaced at he wind, since she forgot to take a jacket with her. Adelina then looked up at Gabe as she stayed at his side. "So, how do you think the day has become so far?" She asked politely.
Gabe walked beside her, keeping pace as he did. “It was fun.” He mused as he shoved his hands into his pockets. He looked at her with a small smile before he shifted his gaze forward, “I’m really glad I got to be back in town for this one. I probably won’t make it to the next one after all.” He shrugged his shoulders simply at that. God only knew where he’d end up by then, whether it be overseas fighting with America’s finest or helping to build homes in third world countries, his life was un predictable at best. He liked it that way though.
Out of the corners of his eyes he saw her shiver and without a word he had his messenger bag over his head and was taking off the flannel jacket he had but on over his volunteer tee shirt when the event was over. He put his messenger bag back in place over one shoulder and resting on the opposite hip and then unfolded the sleeves of the jacket so they would cover more than just her upper arms. “It’s been a good day. Not at all what I was expecting it to be but I have no complaints.” He said as he carefully draped the flannel over her shoulders. “There you go, that should keep you warm.” He said, looking at her with a lopsided grin.
Adelina heard his reply and smiled. "I am glad that you also enjoyed it." She said politely as she kept at a casual stroll. Her blue eyes never leave the handsome man at her side. She heard his words and sighed. "Well, I will miss seeing you there then. I tend to set time aside to do this events." She added and felt the wind tickle her pink cheeks which made her shiver some more. Her eyes blinked as she gazed up at the man who accompanies her on the path. His next gesture of a gentleman sort of made her pause. She felt him wrap the jacket around her. Addie stopped and gazed up at him with a splendid smile. "Gabe, you did not need to do that. Still, thank you. I... I will make sure to return it to you before we separate ways." She said and then timidly reached out and lightly squeezed his hand. "Also, thank you for saving me from being trampled earlier today." She added and gave him a nod of her head. Addie then paused and looked around the setting and politely detached her hand from his. A light blush colored her cheeks as she paused in her stride again. Her eyes gazed up at him. "I am sorry, but I have to do this." Addie whispered before reaching up on her toes and giving Gabe a kiss on the cheek. Her hand gave his a squeeze before her lips met his softly for a few seconds. The mortal then stepped back and timidly ducked her head. "I should have not done that." She said out loud and mostly to herself.
Gabriel smiled at what she said before shifting his gaze back forward, "I admire that. Unfortunately my time is not always my own. Between being part of the Armed Forces and working with a lot of over seas charities I just do what I can when I can." He explained, he looked at her again and offered a reassuring smile, "But I do have a home here so I am sure we'll run into each other again. Just try to not get trampled at the next one since I won't be there to save you." He said with a teasing wink.
She thanked him for the jacket and assured he's get it back. He shook his head, he wasn't concerned with getting it back. He wasn't the type of person to grow attached to material possessions after all, if he needed a new jacket he would just go buy a new one. "Don't worry about it. I don't want you getting cold on your way home. It's just a jacket so I don't mind." He smiled. He wasn't uncomfortable with the hand grab, personal space wasn't an issue for him. What did throw him off though is when he stopped him and kissed his cheek. He was about to say something when her lips was on his. His brow furrowed, the last person he had kissed was Lailah and she died by the hand of a demon. Was this betraying her memory? Sure he was attracted to this human but was this okay? It was over before his thought process could finish and he looked at her with a locked jaw of contemplation. "It is... It's fine. I just... The last person I was with took her very last breath in my arms so... Let's slow this down please. I'd like to get to know you a little better before we do that again, okay?" He requested, hoping it wasn't too much to ask. He never knew how humans would take things.
"I should have not kissed. Instead, I should have hugged you or something.I guess it was a bit foolish of me to kiss you without knowing you, Gabe. I am sorry." She said politely and ducked her head. Addie sighed and looked up at him again. She thought over what he said nodded. "Okay." She added and squeezed his hand politely. "Sure. I will keep myself from doing that again... until we know each other better." The mortal said. "Also, I never had a man give me his jacket. Most will just shrug it off or guide me home." She added and looked at Gabe with her blue eyes. She then looked away before pulling Gabe's jacket around herself some more. Addie then led him to a bench and sat down. "I grew up in this city. I never truly left it, but I do travel a little. I have been to a few other cities, but Los Angeles has always drawn me back. I don't know why, but sometimes I feel that I belong here. It is that or I am too scared to go into the big wide world. I don't really know why I have always stayed here." She said mostly to herself, but said it out loud. Her blue eyes looked over at the faint outlines of the main buildings. "I am a photographer who wants to travel and explore, but I never got the bravery to leave this city which is my home." She sighed and crossed her right leg over her left knee and hugged it to her chest. She stared around and sighed before looking up at Gabe. She then gave him a polite smile as she sat there silently.
